Cornelius is a well-respected leader and investor in the renewable energy industry and built several successful clean energy businesses and start-ups within Middle East and Africa. He has extensive board level experience from 10 years in Deutsche Bank (among others, youngest board member in Deutsche Bank Italy Group) and several leading renewable energy organisations and associations via pro bono work as well as different startup companies.
By building the international shareholder and partner network of Dii (Desertec Industrial Initiative), he was at the forefront of the renewable energy revolution in North Africa and the Middle East. A keen entrepreneur and investor in emerging markets with recognitions such as “Solar Pioneer 2015” for the Middle East, he is lecturing at several universities including St. Gallen and is a regular speaker at international conferences. He holds an MBA (Dipl. Kaufmann) from University of Passau, and speaks German, English, Italian, French and Russian.
His experience ranges from M&A transactions, asset management, developing utility scale renewable energy projects (including mid-market with private PPAs), pay-as-you-go solar to energy efficiency, including ESCO projects and new business models. Some of the projects and companies were executed in challenging settings or countries. He has led sizable organizations both in startup environments and blue-chip companies and has raised funds from angel investments to USD 100m+ projects with institutional investors.

Anna Shpitsberg serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Transformation at the U.S. Department of State. Ms. Shpitsberg is responsible for supporting a shift to a decarbonized economy that enables secure and resilient energy systems. Shpitsberg leads efforts and advises on power market reform, clean energy financing, and resilient supply chains to support transitioning power, transport, and end-use sectors. Additionally, she leads U.S. representation at the International Renewable Energy Agency, and other bilateral and multilateral engagements on energy with U.S. allies and partners.
In her prior role, Shpitsberg served as Director for Global Power and Renewables at IHS Markit. In this capacity she conducted research on emerging trends in the power sector; collaborated with teams covering power, clean energy technology, upstream energy, climate, economics, transport, and agriculture on possible outcomes for the energy transition; advised executives on trends that may impact their business strategy; led corporate renewable research, including the outlook for the United States; consulted on bespoke renewable projects; and managed the buildout of power market analysis and research in Africa and the Middle East.
Prior to joining IHS Markit, Ms. Shpitsberg established the U.S. Department of State’s Power Sector Program (PSP) through which she partnered with and advised utilities, regulators, system operators, and energy ministries on power market reform, energy resource optimization and procurement, regional power market development, and renewable energy integration and financing. In this role, she designed, managed, and advised on over 30 projects in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, including in Angola, Argentina, Cambodia, Chile, Honduras, Mexico, Peru, and Vietnam. She also held positions at the U.S. Department of Energy, the Rocky Mountain Institute, and Morgan Stanley. Ms. Shpitsberg holds a BS from Binghamton University in Finance and an MEM in Environmental Economics and Policy from Duke University with a focus on power systems and the energy-water nexus.

Dr. Benyoucef is the Head of the Energy Studies Department at the OPEC Secretariat. The Department is responsible for monitoring, analyzing and forecasting world energy developments in the medium and long term and reporting thereon. It also monitors developments and undertakes specific studies on energy demand and production-related technology. Prior to joining OPEC in September 2017, he was the acting Director of Studies and Knowledge Management at the Algerian National Oil Company, SONATRACH, where he was responsible for mid- and long-term planning, in particular coordinating training activities and setting up a knowledge management and technological mastery system.
Dr. Benyoucef was engaged for many years as a lecturer and researcher at the Algerian Petroleum Institute.
Dr. Benyoucef has a Ph.D. in Energy Economics from Bourgogne University (France) & the French Petroleum Institute (France) and holds a Bachelor degree in Petroleum Economics.

Dmitry Sokolov has been Head of Energy Economics and Forecasting Department (EEFD) at Gas Exporting Countries Forum since December 2015.
At the GECF, Mr Sokolov is responsible for developing views on the gas market development by projecting supply and demand figures into the future to obtain better understanding of the mid- and long-term gas sector trends and providing quantitative assessment of the impact of policies, regulations, investments and commercial decisions, thorough analysis and utilization of specialized energy and gas forecasting models.
More specifically, Mr Sokolov is responsible for supervising long-term gas market Outlook development process based on various scenario assumptions, GECF Global Gas Model (GGM) runs and regular updates of the data and constraints of GGM, as well as development of econometrical long and medium term forecasting sub-model related to macroeconomics and energy sector to complement GECF GGM.
Prior to the GECF, Mr Sokolov worked for four years as Researcher at the Asia Pacific Energy Research Centre (APERC)/ The Institute of Energy Economic, Japan (IEEJ).
In 2006-2009, Mr Sokolov worked for three years as International Researcher at the Korea Energy Economics Institute (KEEI).
He is originally from Irkutsk, the Russian Federation, where he spent many years in working as Researcher of the Melentiev Energy Systems Institute of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Eng.Wael has 18 years’ experience in the gas Industry. He started his career as a gas engineer in 2004 at one of Eni’s JVs, (Petrobel) in Egypt, and held several roles from field operations to production planning until held the position of production department manager. He was appointed at OAPEC as a gas industries expert since 2013. He conducts technical studies covering the current developments and future prospects of gas/LNG and hydrogen sectors.
Eng.Wael actively participates at various international forums and gives presentations addressing the sustainability credentials of gas and focuses on policies and actions that underpin use of gas in different sectoral areas and how to attain sustainable development goals.
Eng.Wael holds a MSc degree (with honours) in Petroleum Engineering from Politecnico di Torino in Italy and a BSc degree (with honours) in chemical engineering & petroleum refining. Recently, he obtained a MBA diploma in Project Management.

Mr. Grabert has worked for the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat (UNFCCC) for more than 25 years. He heads the Mitigation Division of the UNFCCC, leading the work on market-based approaches to climate change mitigation. In addition, he also currently leads the secretariat’s Communication and Engagement Division.
Prior to 2006 he served as a greenhouse gas emissions specialist and worked in numerous expert groups of the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Before joining the United Nations, he was an industry and regional analyst for the World Economic Forum in Geneva, Switzerland.
Mr. Grabert holds a B.A. in Economics and International Relations from Wheaton College, Masters of International Economics from the Institut de Hautes Études Internationales in Geneva, and has undertaken post-graduate studies in Management at Stanford University, University of Navarra (IESE) and London Business School, and in Development at Harvard University.

Dr. Sherif Ayoub is the Chief Financial Officer for the Arab Petroleum Investments Corporation (APICORP) where he oversees treasury and capital markets, financial control, financial planning and analytics, financial operations, budget and corporate performance as well as risk management. Prior to APICORP, he has assumed numerous leadership positions over his career, serving as Senior Advisor at the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and Assistant Secretary General at the Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB), in addition to working with A.T. Kearney, the US Government, United Nations, and the World Bank in different capacities.
Notably, Dr. Ayoub acquired his PhD in Finance from the University of Edinburgh and is also a holder of a Masters’ Degree from Columbia University and a Bachelors’ Degree from Baldwin Wallace University. In addition, he has served as a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University.

Tim Karlsson is Executive Director of the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy (IPHE) Secretariat, since 2015. The IPHE is an inter-governmental partnership of 21 countries and the European Commission, working to help facilitate the transition to clean and efficient energy, industry, and mobility systems using hydrogen and fuel cells technologies.
Previously, Mr. Karlsson held various positions including Director of Emerging Technologies, and, Director of Environmental and Clean Energy Industries in the Department of Industry of Canada.
He has worked on numerous policy issues related to energy and the environment including domestic and international climate change in part as a member of Canada’s delegation to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Dr. Roland Roesch is Deputy Director at the Innovation and Technology Center of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). He currently leads IRENA´s work on RE Innovation, Grids-Assessments and the Strategies Teams for Power Sector Transformation and for the Gas Sector Transformation. During his first years of assignment he was the lead to set-up the IRENA Project Navigator platform to support member countries with developing renewable energy projects. He actively leads the development of IRENA´s work in the fields of ocean energy, blue economy and decarbonizing the shipping sector.
Roland became in October 2010 a Professor for Energy Economics at the University of Applied Science in Darmstadt he worked for 15 years in the Oil&Gas and Utilities Industry for Shell and E.ON in his last position as General Manager Power at Shell and for E.ON as Head of Division, Project Leader, Project Executive and Technical Project Developer. Before he joined E.ON he worked as Energy Market Consultant for Lahmeyer International and as researcher for renewable energies. Roland has solid business experience in energy markets, energy economics and energy strategies, renewable integration management, energy project development and project financing.

Ahmed Badr is the Director of the International Renewable Energy Agency’s (IRENA) Project Facilitation and Support division (PFS), a new division that offers member countries dedicated project implementation support. Mr. Badr took up the position in April 2020 and brings more than 30 years of international experience in the field of banking and finance.
In his role, Mr. Badr is tasked with leading the development of the division, while spearheading the Agency’s implementation of the Climate Investment Platform, a multi-stakeholder platform in established in partnership with SE4All, the UNDP and in coordination with Green Climate Fund to streamline access to climate funding for developing countries and advance renewables deployment.
Prior to joining IRENA, Mr. Badr held several senior operational positions in the field of climate change, renewable energy, energy efficiency, water and infrastructure projects in a number of multinational financial institutions, including the World Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, European Commission (EuropeAid), and Japan Bank for International Cooperation.
Mr. Badr is certified a project infrastructure project manager, with a B.Sc in Civil Engineering and Master’s Degree in Infrastructure Economics from the Universite de Nates, France.

TOPIC : The role of renewables in MENA: growth opportunities and challenges
Ms. Silvia Macri, Principal Research Manager, is responsible for renewable and power market analysis in Africa and Middle East. She has led the regional renewables research for over 9 years, covering renewable power policy trends, business models, emerging renewable strategies, project activity and competitive landscape, among others. Her research scope includes all renewable power technologies’ options. She’s also contributed to a number of projects led by the IHS Markit Consulting Team looking at renewable energy strategy in long-term national energy planning, renewables commercial due diligence and market entry strategies. She has international experience in analysis and communication, having been based in the Middle East for over five years before her role at IHS Markit. Ms. Macri was an energy researcher and journalist for the Middle East Economic Survey (MEES), based in Beirut, Lebanon, and previously a development advisor at UNDP in Cairo, Egypt.
Ms. Macri holds a BA in International Relations from Bologna University (Italy) and a Master’s degree in Arab Gulf Studies from the University of Exeter (UK). She is Frankfurt School’s Certified Expert in Climate and Renewable Energy Finance (2018). Ms. Macri is based in Paris and speaks Italian, English, Spanish, and French, and has a basic knowledge of Arabic.

Ryan McPherson is the Regional Director (Middle East, Africa, Russia & CIS) for EIC (Energy Industries Council), a not-for-profit organisation whose key role is to help its members maximise commercial opportunities worldwide in the energy sector.
He is a judge on the ADIPEC Awards Technical Committee and Energy Section Chair for the British Business Group (Dubai). Closer to home he is the recipient of the Rising Star Award at the 2010 Scottish Offshore Achievement Awards and a founding member of the Oil and Gas UK ‘Next Generation’ Task Force, and has presented across the globe at Offshore Europe, ADIPEC, SPE Applied Technology Workshops and the Produced Water Society.
Prior to joining EIC, Ryan worked for ProSep where he led the company’s Middle East operations as General Manager, integrating the company’s tools and solutions into many of the regions national oil and gas companies. Ryan was also the Middle East & APAC Regional Director for the Industry Technology Facilitator (ITF), a membership organisation which supports oil and gas product and service companies bringing new technologies to market, launching their Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) cluster.
Ryan holds a BA (Hons) in Law and Management and a MBA in Oil and Gas Management. He lives in Abu Dhabi with his wife and two daughters.

Stijn has been appointed as Supervisory Board member of TenneT, the operator of the high-voltage networks throughout the Netherlands and most of Germany and therefore plays an essential role in the energy transition in Europe. Ahmad works in the Private Sector Projects Department (‘PSPD’) of the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) having been there since its establishment in 2014. The Department manages Kuwait’s new PPP projects, the first of which (Az Zour North Phase 1 - 1540MW CCGT, 107MIGD - $1.7bn PPP project) will shortly commence its third year of commercial operation. Other CCGT projects (Az Zour 2 & 3 and Al khairan – 4500MW CCGT and 290 MIGD) are at EOI stage and are expected to come to market more materially at the end of 2019.
On renewables projects, PSPD’s main focus is on the Shagaya Park project developments. Shagaya Phase 1 (70MW - 10MW wind, 10MW PV and 50MW CSP) is fully commissioned and will transfer to MEW in the near future and he is following the transfer process to MEW. On Shagaya Phase 2 (1500 MW PV Park – ‘Al Dibdibah’) Ahmad is a a member of the MEW technical team that is interacting with KNPC to ensure that the plant will be technically compliant with MEWs needs and contracted at a level which accords to international best practice. In this regard he is actively engaged in discussions with KNPC to finalize the PPA and other commercial/technical documentation for the project. On Phase 2 MEW will be the Buyer. For Shagaya Phase 3 (1500MW PV), Ahmad led the MEW team that interacted with the Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research (‘KISR’) and it’s appointed Consultant, reviewing and providing MEW inputs into the feasibility studies. He now has the responsibility to progress the project, in conjunction with KAPP, through the Kuwait PPP Processes and to the market for bidding.
Ahmad is currently Kuwait’s coordinator with IRENA “International Renewable Energy Agency” for Roadmap and Readiness Report Assessment “RRA”, and a member of Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency Experts Committee at Arab League, member of AEE, and member of the State Higher Technical Renewable Energy Committee. He has represented MEW and the State of Kuwait (attendee & Speaker) at many events, conferences, and meetings such as, the annual meeting of executives of the Arab Atomic Energy Agency, which was organized with IAEA attendance. He also recently represented MEW at the World Water Day organized by the United Nations, presenting on how the energy sector manages its waste water and attended several conferences as a speaker on the behalf of MEW. His interests are in power projects, renewable energy and clean environment.

Robert Pitz-Paal is director at the Institute of Solar Research of the German Aerospace Center, the largest research institution in Germany working in the field of concentrating solar technologies. This position is jointly assigned with a professorship at Aachen University. His main research areas are the technical analysis and optimization of concentrating solar power systems for generating electricity and producing fuels. He has published more than 200 papers, book chapters, and conference contributions.
Pitz-Paal has been Chair of the Executive Committee of the International Network SolarPACES (Solar Power and Chemical Energy Systems) of the International Energy Organization (IEA) since 2017. He is on the board of the DCSP German association for Concentrated Solar Power and in the executive committee of the European Solar Thermal Electricity Association ESTELA.
In 2017, Pitz-Paal received the Farrington-Daniels Award of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES). I am an economist with more than 15 years of experience in natural gas activities and markets, during which i were able to gain a variety of experiences, which began at the Egyptian Natural Gas Company (GASCO), -the Egyptian transmission grid operator, where I used to conduct and evaluate the financial and economic feasibility studies of many major projects related to natural gas activities such as transportation, distribution, supply and processing activities.
Also , I am one of the founders of the Egyptian Gas Regulatory Authority, where I participated in the first shadow regulator since 2013, in which we managed to finalize all the needed preparations for the formal establishment of the Regulator in 2018, during i participated in the drafting of the new gas law No. 196 for the year 2017 and its executive regulations , in addition to drafting all the economic and commercial aspects related to the Egyptian market such as license fees , grid tariff, network code and any other Economic regulation issues.
I am also an active member in MedReg - consumer working group – and also in ERRA - Natural Gas Markets and Economic Regulation Committee.
